Women to access $8 pharmacist contraceptives in 12-month trial

Australia’s peak body for GPs has slammed plans to expand access to contraceptives, warning the “lobbyist-led” decision could put women’s health at risk.

Mark Butler appeared before the Pharmacy Guild conference on Friday, a year after announcing a national trial allowing trained pharmacists to prescribe contraceptives and antibiotics for “uncomplicated” UTIs to concession card holders.

The trial will run for 12 months and is expected to begin in January 2027.
