Melville parks ‘at saturation point’ with public memorials

A “saturation” of public memorials has led to the City of Melville council pulling the pin on any more being allowed.

Requests for personal memorials in the city’s public open spaces have been on hold since 2024 while staff tried to work out how to accommodate them.

The memorials are usually a park bench with a plaque. The city has about 225 memorial plaques; on average it had received about 15 requests a year but this had surged to as high as 30 in 2022.
