Former AFL player Joel Smith has spoken for the first time on the cocaine saga that led to a lengthy doping ban.

The 29-year-old ex-Melbourne defender is not eligible to play in any organised sport until 2028 after testing positive for cocaine following a match in 2023.

Sport Integrity Australia (SIA) also later charged him trafficking or attempted trafficking of cocaine to third parties in 2020 and 2022, and also possession of cocaine in 2022.
